Frequently Asked Questions
Working with an editor can help to transform your manuscript, and it's important to know what to expect. Here are my answers to some frequently asked questions from authors.
Why should I work with an editor?
I only take on clients whose work I know has potential, so the feedback you receive from me will be actionable and encouraging. I will get the best out of your text, with realistic assessments tailored to your needs.
What are the differences between development editing, copy-editing and proofreading?
Developmental editing is reading a book as a whole and assessing whether it does what it sets out to do. I provide an editorial assessment of between five and ten A4 pages. Copy-editing is the part of the process where spelling, grammar and minor inconsistences are polished. Proofreading is the stage that makes the book print-ready.
How long does the process take?
Between a month and six weeks for a novel, and less than four weeks for shorter projects. I am open to fast turnarounds, so please don’t hesitate to ask. If your deadline is not urgent, we can agree on longer to give you a fuller experience.
Can you edit in batches?
I can edit in batches, particularly if the book is a non-fiction title or collection of short stories. Otherwise, I prefer to edit as a whole, but if given notice I can edit most books in batches.
What happens after I finish working with you?
Most writers want to sit with the feedback for a while, but some are on tighter deadlines, so it depends. I provide the option of a post-editing Zoom call within a month of completion. If you want to check in after that, you can do so for up to six months after the project is complete.
What other things could you help with?
Writing back cover copy, writing synopses of any length (detailed or short), drafting press releases, marketing and publicity advice and query letter reviews.
